Levada Walking

Madeira is covered by irrigation channels known as levadas. There are over 200 of these channels and they make ideal walking trails.
Most of the routes are accessible, though there are varying degrees of difficulty. Don't try this alone, because the weather can be treacherous and some of the walks are just plain dangerous if you're not either a local or a mountain goat.

Don't miss the Laurissilva Forest, which has been declared a World Natural Heritage Site and covers about 20% of the entire island.
If you're lucky (and very, very quiet) you might just spot rare birds like the long-toed pigeon (Columba trocaz), or the Madeiran chaffinch (Fringila coelebs maderensis).
